Wonderings

In principal, one could play with the board rotated 90 degrees (i.e. dark and light squares reversed) or one could play with kings on d1/d8 and queens on e1/e8 in the starting position (i.e. left/right mirrored) and could play basically the same chess games as on a regular board.

However both of these modifications would annoy me so much that probably my rating would drop considerably in this case. Has anybody studied why this could have an influence on playing strength? Are there any other modifications to the rules of the game which would not alter the actual chess games?
