Why is this game a loss? If its because a "mating position" is technically possible can't someone just play on forever in bishop v bishop if hes up on time, since there's no 50 moves rule in blitz, thats messed up?

Because of FIDE Laws of Chess:
"6.9 Except where one of the Articles: 5.1.a, 5.1.b, 5.2.a, 5.2.b, 5.2.c applies, if a player does
not complete the prescribed number of moves in the allotted time, the game is lost by
the player. However, the game is drawn, if the position is such that the opponent cannot
checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves."
Here a series of legal moves leading to checkmate exists, so you lost on time.
50 moves rule and 3 fold repetition apply to blitz as well, as long as a claim can be verified, which is the case online.
If you do not like it that way, then play with increment.

^ I've never seen the 50 move rule apply in online chess, also nothing would change with increment they can just keep playing on and on and on until you run out of internet.
