This probably is why people cheat for no real gain

In fact there's one instance I know of. Tal, arguably the most entertaining attcking World Champion of all time, said after losing to Nezmetdinov: "It was the happiest day of my life." I don't think I read too much into it when I say: those who know what is what might sometimes be happy with losing.
Hard to say. Some might want rating bump to impress girls that honestly don't care. Some people cheat at things in life bc they are immature or a soci0path. People brag about fake achievements for adulation that will never follow.
the tal variation comes from tal [ today i played the tal variation of the queens gambit declined
People cheat.
Cheating in a game exposes one's mentality and indicates a propensity to cheat in all areas of life if the chance arises.
The percentage drops based on severity and effectiveness of the punishment.

That's a pretty sad view of the world. Conservative thinking in a nutshell. You don't trust other people, need to dish out more punishment. But only for the poor people obviously, if you "optimize taxes" that's not considered cheating even though it achieves the exact same thing.

The biggest reason I don't cheat on Lichess is that it's too easy. Where's the fun? If they took your suggestion and implemented "effective" measures (which is frankly not possible), I would have to attempt the challenge.

I don't really get what you are talking about in that first paragraph. About the second, no comment.

Okay, let me simplify for you. What I tried to say was: "since you don't attempt to understand cheaters at all, you will always fail at eliminating cheating".

What changes after they understand them? They have to understand signs of cheating, not the psychological reasons.

What are such signs of cheating? And do you think that's effective? Obviously you should try to ban blatant cheaters that way (and ban them fast and in an automated way, I believe Lichess needs you to report someone first and then it eventually gets processed) but let's be honest that doesn't work if the cheater has more than 2 brain cells.

You need to first understand, then you will know what steps to take. Otherwise, you may end up blindly guessing based on your ideology.
